UNO recognized the accomplishments of outstanding faculty and students last week, during its annual Honors Convocation events.
Seniors presented projects throughout the week, which gave students from all departments an opportunity see what fellow classmates were doing academically. “For me, as a creative writer, it was interesting to see what’s going on in other departments,” said Alex McKeane, a senior creative writing major. “The presentations are important because students work hard for four years and deserve an opportunity to share their projects and get recognition.”
Erin Gesell, a senior Spanish and creative writing major, thought the presentations were necessary to show UNO’s increasingacademic importance.
“I wouldn’t think anyone from UNO would be working with something as big as that,” she said about one engineering student’s project about HVAC systems in museums. “It really shows you the opportunities that can come from UNO and Omaha.”
Gesell also said the presentations were an opportunity for students across disciplines to share their work.
“Obviously your family and advisers know what you’re doing,” she said. “It’s cool to share that with people across disciplines and across campus.”
The Student Convocation took place at 4 p.m. in the Strauss Performing Arts Center. During the ceremony, UNO recognized outstanding undergraduate and graduate students with scholarships, honoree awards and awards from the senior vice chancellor and the deans. Students were also recognized for outstanding service-learning, leadership and student-athlete excellence.
A Faculty Honors Convocation took place during a breakfast event in the Milo Bail Student Center Ballroom. The event paid tribute to the recipients of the University’s outstanding teaching, research and creative activity, mentoring, service-learning and distinguished professorship awards.
