The Honor and Remember Nebraska Chapter is looking for families who’ve lost loved ones who died while serving in the military. The organization presents special, personalized flags to honor and remember the service and sacrifice of the military member.

“Although we’ve been able to find families who’ve lost a loved one since 2001, finding families whose loved one died in World War II, the Korean and Vietnam wars has been challenging,” said Jim Meier, director of the Honor and Remember Nebraska Chapter.

Family members, referred to as Gold Star families, are eligible to request a flag. They include a parent, spouse, child, or sibling of a military member or veteran. The family member does not need to be currently residing in Nebraska.

Gold Star families may request a flag if the military member died on active duty for any reason or a veteran whose death was due to injury or illness while in the military. Examples include agent orange, sustained wounds, post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury.

The flags are funded through donations to the organization.
