Men’s Tennis drops Concordia, loses to Hastings
The UNO Men’s Tennis team split a pair of matches Wednesday, beating Concordia (Neb.), 6-3 before losing to Hastings College 5-4.
Eric McKnight led the Mavs on the day. The sophomore was the only Mav to go 2-0 in singles play. McKnight, a Millard North graduate, beat Concordia’s Jeremey Jank 6-0, 6-2 in No. 2 singles and then beat Vinny Banda of Hastings 4-6, 6-1, 10-7.
McKnight and teammate Anthony Forucci went 1-1 at No. 1 doubles. The duo beat Concordia’s Jonathan Schleicher and Jeremy Jank 8-6 and lost to Tyler Benson and Seton Bachle of Hastings by a score of 8-3.
Matt Frost, McKnight and Forucci each secured victories in singles play against Concordia. However, the Mavs dropped four of six singles matches against Hastings.
Nebraska Omaha has three regular-season matches remaining on the season. The Mavs will be back in action on April 12 when they host Nebraska-Kearney.
Soper wins award
Senior golfer Ricca Soper was named the MIAA Women’s Golfer of the Week last week. The Estherville, Iowa native posted a four-over-par score of 76 in the second round of the Drury Spring Shootout to lead UNO in scoring.
Soper finished the tournament with a score of 160, 16 over par, tying for fifth place in the field of 78 golfers.
It was the second time this season that a UNO golfer won the award this year. Senior Dani Suponchick won it on March 23.
