ABC Breakfast series to continue Wednesday

The third event in the 2001-2002 Academy, Business and Community Breakfast Speaker Series will be held March 27 when pilot and engineer Donna Shirley takes to the podium at the Holiday Inn Convention Center at 72nd and Grover streets.

Shirley was the manager of the Mars Exploration Program for NASA, leading the team that built the $25 million Sojourner Rover, the first autonomous rover on the surface of another planet, the first mobile vehicle on the surface of Mars and the smallest spacecraft ever flown.

Shirley has appeared on CNN, ABC, NBC, the Discovery Channel and PBS, among other broadcast stations.

She is the author of *Managing Martians: The Extraordinary Story of a Woman’s Lifelong Quest to Get to Mars and the online book *Managing Creativity: A Practical Guide to Inventing, Developing and Producing Innovative Products.

Shirley obtained bachelor’s degrees in journalism and aerospace engineering from the University of Oklahoma and a master’s degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Southern California.

Her program for the breakfast, titled “The Mars Pathfinder Exploration: Managing Martians,” is sponsored by UNO in cooperation with the DLR Group, Enron, Strategic Air and Space Museum, The Omaha Home for Boys and the UNO Alumni Association.

Doors open for the breakfast buffet at 7 a.m. Tickets are $15 each.
